We are honored to share an upcoming event of deep historical significance that will take place on Saturday, February 21st, 2026, here in San Antonio, Texas – proudly known as Military City USA®. This ceremony will commemorate The Weslaco Eight, a group of eight young men from Weslaco, Texas who, on February 18, 1943, traveled to San Antonio and stood atop the Historic Bedell-Ayres Building to raise their right hands and take the Oath of Enlistment into the United States Marine Corps.
This rooftop enlistment — believed to be one of the most unique in U.S. Marine Corps history — forged a lasting connection between the Rio Grande Valley, the Marine Corps, and the City of San Antonio. Among the eight recruits was Private First Class Harlon Block, who would later be immortalized as one of the Marines raising the American flag atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima. That photograph has become one of the most iconic symbols of American courage, sacrifice, and resolve.
Why This Event Matters
This commemoration is not just about honoring eight remarkable Texans — it is about preserving history, recognizing extraordinary service, and strengthening the legacy of military heritage in San Antonio. The story of The Weslaco Eight embodies:
-
Courage and patriotism in a time of global conflict
-
Texas’ long tradition of answering the call to serve
-
San Antonio’s role as the gateway to military service for generations
-
The shared legacy between South Texas communities and the Marine Corps
This event will bring together veterans, active-duty service members, families, historians, civic leaders, and community partners to ensure this chapter of history continues to be remembered, celebrated, and passed forward to future generations.
